Is it time to look after you?

Taking the time and the care to look after our own health is something that can be easily forgotten in the rush of a busy lifestyle, but maybe now is the time to make it a number 1 priority
Over recent years there can be little doubt that our nation has become more aware of our health, as well as the need to monitor our own sense of wellbeing. Whether it be keeping a closer eye on what we eat or drink, maintaining healthy habits within our lifestyle or making sure we exercise regularly, the nation does seem to have a greater understanding now, more than ever before, of what it means to be fit and healthy.
However, the truth is we need to do more. While the knowledge might be out there, sometimes our actions and lifestyles don’t follow what we know will be good for us. There are many events helping to further highlight the need for us all to take a greater responsibility for our health and March sees Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and it is thought that here in the UK around 36,000 are diagnosed with this disease each year.
The condition is linked to the consequences of a Western diet rich in red meat and processed foods, a lack of exercise and a family history of prostate and breast cancers.
As with many conditions, regular health checks can help men take control of their own lives and live longer in the fight against prostate cancer. Symptoms that may point to a problem with the prostate include difficult or slow urination, blood in the urine or semen or erection problems. Men with the above symptoms should get a prostate specific blood test and examination by a specialist in order to detect early prostate cancer, which can be curable in most cases.
Essex Men’s Health is located at The Oaks Hospital in Colchester. The service was developed due to the overwhelming requirement for dedicated healthcare services specifically for men’s needs. The team at Essex Men’s Health are passionate about providing high quality, discreet and professional care for men who want to optimise their health.
The Essex Men’s Health Check provides a comprehensive and affordable Health Screen by focusing specifically on the key tests which help detect the most common causes of premature death in men, such as prostate cancer and heart disease.
You will be seen by a specialist and an assessment consists of a full history and physical exam, plus a wide range of blood tests for diabetes, cholesterol, thyroid and prostate problems and kidney and liver function. Heart tracing, lung function and urine testing complete the assessment. Your test results will be discussed with you and a full report sent to you and your GP within ten days, allowing early action to be taken.
The Oaks Hospital also offers a bespoke health screening package for women to help optimise female health. So maybe March is the month for you to be proactive about your health.
