Historian, author and broadcaster Dan Snow has captivated television audiences with programmes encompassing everything from the Vikings to 20th century battlefields. Kate Everett caught up with him ahead of his tour of live shows in Essex

As the great-grandson of British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, the son of legendary broadcaster Peter Snow and the nephew of Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow, you may be forgiven for expecting great things from Dan Snow.

His career has been driven by a lifelong passion for history initiated by childhood visits to castles, battlefields and historic buildings.

After studying history at Oxford, Dan started presenting history programmes with his father and their collaborative series, Battlefield Britain, went on to win a BAFTA.

Since then Dan has produced a number of insightful historical documentaries such as Armada, Grand Canyon and Vikings and has presented anniversary programmes commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the landings at Gallipoli in 2015, as well as written or contributed to several books.

With a dedication to inspiring the nation through history, Dan has launched his own online TV channel, History Hit TV, and is taking his passion for history across the UK in a live tour.

In Dan Snow – An Evening With The History Guy On The History Hit UK Tour 2018, he will share memorable anecdotes from his career as a historian and broadcaster, with fascinating historical insights, enhanced with compelling digital imagery. Every show will have its own unique element that will see Dan present historical facts about each town and area on the tour.

‘It’s my first live tour so I’m incredibly excited, and a bit nervous,’ explains Dan. ‘It’s not just me on the stage, we’ve got some amazing digital imagery that will help bring every story to life, and I’m going to be spending some time in every town before the show to find interesting pieces of local history to bring with me.

‘There’s always a story behind what we know from the history books and that’s what I want to bring to life and share with the audience.’

With the launch of History Hit, Dan’s aim is to ignite a passion for history in young people and make it accessible to everyone.

‘Launching the TV channel is all about getting people excited about history,’ explains Dan. ‘History Hit works a bit like Netflix.

‘It’s packed with history programmes that have been designed to engage with all audiences and make history exciting and accessible. I like to think that history is for everyone; it explains the world we live in, why we live in a place called Great Britain and what we can learn from the past.’
