Since Benfleet’s Abbie Norbury won a competition to become the new travel news presenter on Daryl Denham’s breakfast show on Radio Essex her mornings have never been the same. Away from the studio, Abbie is also a yoga teacher and nutritionist, and the owner of three businesses: NorburYoga, Norbury Fitness and Norbury Nutrition.

My favourite Essex place to go for dinner…

Keralam restaurant in Southend

I have a real passion for food and as a qualified nutritionist I’m always keen to source places to eat that offer consistent quality. Perhaps surprisingly, I don’t always want to eat a super-healthy meal when dining out! I’m pretty angelic at home, so when I’m eating out I like to allow myself some treats. As long as the food is good quality and well presented, I’ll allow myself the occasional splurge. Having travelled all over the world, I have a taste for a variety of cuisines, particularly Indian, having been to India on a number of occasions. More specifically I like southern Indian food, so the Keralam restaurant in Southend is a favourite of mine as it offers a really authentic experience in the flavours of Kerala. I also really love traditional British fare, when it’s done well, and Affinity restaurant in Leigh does just that. It’s become my favourite place to go for somewhere to enjoy a thoroughly tasty, well-priced meal.

My favourite Essex place to go for coffee…

Cafe Max in Benfleet

There are chain coffee shops everywhere you look these days, but I prefer to support local independents. Cafe Max in Benfleet is a favourite local and great on a summer day when you can enjoy a coffee on the patio. Another lovely place to sit and enjoy a cuppa is the Three Shells Cafe in Southend. It’s right on the beach, so offers beautiful views of the estuary.

My favourite Essex place to go for a walk…

Thorndon Country Park, near Brentwood

I love the great outdoors and feel there’s nothing better than going for a walk and really connecting with nature. Just being surrounded by a plethora of green grass and trees automatically puts me at ease and decreases my stress levels. It’s even better if I’m lucky enough to spot some wildlife (particularly rabbits, as I am a self-confessed crazy bunny lady!). We’re blessed with so many beautiful spots to go walking in our area, so we really are spoilt for choice, but my favourite would definitely be Thorndon Country Park, near Brentwood. It offers a real variety in terms of green spaces, including natural woodland and more manicured areas.

My favourite Essex attraction...

Tropical Wings Zoo near South Woodham Ferrers

I love the Tropical Wings Zoo near South Woodham Ferrers. It has one of the UK’s only tropical houses to have free-flying butterflies and it really is a wonderful experience to have them fluttering around you as you walk through their habitat. The centre has a wide range of animals to visit and includes a ‘wallaby walk’ which is a particular favourite for me, having previously lived in Australia!

My favourite place in Essex for a pamper…

Pure Elements Salon in Benfleet

Like most women, there’s nothing I enjoy more than a good pamper and for that I go to Pure Elements Salon in Benfleet. It’s really convenient for me and is always a pleasure to visit due to my therapist, Louise, and the relaxing atmosphere she cultivates. Due to my interest in holistic therapies, I enjoy regular reflexology as well as the more girlie treatments like facials and getting my nails done!
