Lee Jaschok, owner of Freedom Funerals based in Colchester, picks five of his favourite things about living in Essex
Lee Jaschok is the owner of Freedom Funerals, a funeral directors he founded on a deep-routed desire to help people during difficult times as well as to offer a truly personal and affordable service. Lee is a huge Colchester United FC fan and recently bought the team’s trophy memorabilia when it went up for sale, so he could present it back to the club to honour its history.
1 My favourite Essex restaurant…
The Boathouse in Dedham is a stunning location for a bite to eat and the food is just as pleasant as the view looking out on to the water. It’s always been my favourite place to visit on a weekend or for a family celebration, as the food is always stunning and beautifully presented. There are plenty of fish options on the menu that I love and each one is delivered with a smile, which makes all the difference.
2 My favourite Essex memory…
It has to be the birth of my son William. It’s some years ago now, but still a treasured memory and a life-changing event. Running a family business in the county has given me the fabulous opportunity of working alongside my son, which is something I cherish every day. We’ve made it our vocation to work together to support the people of Essex in some of the toughest times of their lives, when someone close to them passes away.
3 My favourite Essex night out…
I love an evening at the theatre, so heading over to the Mercury Theatre in Colchester for a performance is the perfect night out for my partner Debbie and I. There is such a diverse programme of shows that means there is always something new to indulge in that takes you out of your comfort zone. We want the theatre to thrive and so as a business we decided to become a corporate sponsor of The Mercury, so we are doing our bit to support this great theatre and theatre company.
4 My favourite Essex walk…
The ideal place I have found for a stroll is the Essex Wildlife Trust at the Abberton Reservoir Centre. The reservoir makes for stunning views as you walk around it and the range of birdlife on show is something to behold. It makes for a great place to get away from the stresses of everyday life and get closer to nature in a beautifully setting.
5 My favourite Essex fact…
I’ve always been fascinated by the life of Boadicea, the warrior Queen who led an army and took on the might of the Roman rule – starting in what is now Colchester. The image of one woman fighting the tide with such gusto has always stuck with me through my time in Essex. It is something I take into business with me as we continue to spread our unique voice, personal touch and caring perspective in the world of big business throughout the county.
