My favourite Essex place to visit…
I love Maldon. I have happy memories as a child, paddling, swimming and rowing a boat on the lake in Promenade Park. This has since been replaced and there is now a popular splash park to cool children off in hot summer months. There are plenty of places to eat and drink for all the family and, as I enjoy looking out for wildlife and bird watching, I like to walk along the banks of the Blackwater or just sit and enjoy the view of the estuary.
My favourite Essex walk
Laindon Hill Country Park and Nature Reserve
I find Laindon Hill Country Park and Nature Reserve such an inspiration. In the spring there is a carpet of bluebells and other woodland flowers and in the summer the colourful meadows are alive with grasshoppers and butterflies. I love to walk to the top of the high, crescent-shaped hilly ridge, where there are panoramic views over the Thames Estuary and across to London. It is a wonderful place to explore, full of footpaths and places to sit and enjoy the scenery.
My favourite Essex tea shop
The Tea Rooms, Paper Mill Lock, Little Baddow
For tea and cake you can’t beat The Tea Rooms at Paper Mill Lock in Little Baddow. I like to sit outside where the tea rooms have a good view of the river so I can watch the world go by while tucking in to carrot cake or whatever takes my fancy. There is a tow path which is great to walk or cycle down, or you can take a cruise down the river past boats and barges moored on the banks with their brightly coloured curtains and flower baskets.
My favourite Essex day out
I love a day out at Colchester Zoo. It is an amazing, well laid out zoo and each time I go I discover something new as well as enjoying my old time favourites – the penguins. Everything is well kept, the animals are well looked after and the staff are friendly and helpful. Feeding the elephants is the highlight for me as they are so gentle. Along with the shows and presentations, it is a great day out.
My favourite Essex place to relax
Clarice House Spa in Colchester.
Clarice House Spa is located in a beautiful Georgian house, surrounded by extensive gardens. I love to spend a day with my daughter relaxing and enjoying a massage, manicure and pedicure. There is a lovely pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. There are lots of different treatments and there is some lovely surrounding countryside for a walk or cycle ride after a tasty lunch.
