Chelmsford City Racecourse’s 2019 initiative, Year of the Hero, returns for a second year in 2020, this time with the support of Essex Life

The community engagement project aims to recognise outstanding members of the community who give tirelessly to help and care for others in their daily lives.

These real life ‘heroes’ are simply people within our local area who may not necessarily gain any recognition for their kindness or selfless effort.

The 2019 Year of the Hero awards celebrated winners across a range of ages, from 15-year-old Tyler Hart who spends a large amount of his time caring for an elderly relative, to Dr Julia Jones, championing the rights of people with dementia to be accompanied by a carer for any hospital stays through her privately funded charity, John’s Campaign.

Local charities were able to nominate any volunteers or success stories of people who had made a huge difference through giving their time and energy to others.

The Wilderness Foundation, Help for Heroes and Havens Hospice were all involved in the initiative and were delighted to have an opportunity to publicly thank some of their greatest supporters.

And there is a great incentive to nominate someone you think is worthy of this prize. Each winner of a Year of the Hero award is invited to Chelmsford City Racecourse to enjoy a meal for four people in the restaurant, have a race named in their honour on a race day, choose the best turned out horse in that race and present the prize to the race winners in the winners’ enclosure.

The race day presenter is always on hand to interview the winner and to extend thanks, on behalf of the racecourse as well as the community, for their actions.
