PUBLISHED: 11:01 20 March 2017 | UPDATED: 11:01 20 March 2017

This walk around the quiet and picturesque village of Langley, tucked right in the northwest corner of the county, goes from the pretty Upper Green around the village to Lower Green and back via the church

Words and pictures by Laurie Page of the Public Rights of Way team at Essex County Council

Distance: 3.7 miles

Terrain: Gentle gradients with no stiles.

Starting point: The Community Hall car park next to Upper Green.

How to get there: From the B1039 between Royston and Wendens Ambo, turn off south to Duddenhoe End and follow the signs to Langley.

OS Map: Explorer 195 Braintree & Saffron Walden

Refreshments: The Bull pub en route.

Tourist information Centre: 1 Market Place, Saffron Walden CB10 1HR. Call 01799 524002.

Place of interest nearby: Saffron Walden is a delightful market town with some stunning architecture while the Jacobean manor house Audley End, now run by English Heritage and offering a great day out for all the family, is well worth a look.

1. Turn right out of the car park and walk along the lane past the village green with its oversize seat, to the road T-junction opposite the chapel. Turn left along the lane, passing some pretty thatched cottages.

Pass an old telephone box, which is now used as a book depositary! Soon after, turn right along the stony track called The Want. The route of the footpath is actually on the grass to the left. At Want Cottage keep straight on into a large field where you bear slightly left going between the crops.

Descend gently to a gap in the hedge. Follow the footpath arrow left, keeping the hedge to your left. In the corner of the field go right following the field boundary leading you to a footbridge by the lane.

2. Take the footpath opposite. At the gate soon after, there are two footpaths running across the field. Take the one on the right. At the other side of the field, bear slightly right so that you are walking along the field edge with the ditch to your left.

At the end, at the county border with Cambridgeshire, cross the road and continue into the next field, still with the ditch to your left. Pass a footbridge and at the corner of the field veer right, going gently uphill. At the top, just as the path bends right, take the path on the left going into the wood. Continue along the edge of the wood. It bends left and emerges into a large field with a ditch on the left.

At the top, turn right on the other side of the hedge onto a bridleway. Continue for some distance to the road. Turn left and walk along the lane, passing thatched cottages, and cross a ford up to the road junction.

3. Turn left and you soon pass The Bull pub (or go in for refreshment) at Lower Green. Continue straight on but look out for a footpath through the hedge on the right opposite a black barn.

Once through the trees, turn right along the field edge with trees on your right. In the next field is a wooden fence to the right, then the path runs between crop fields towards the church with distant views of the Essex countryside all around.

At the end of the field, bear right, then immediately left and go along the field boundary to a gap on the left, bringing you to the parish church. Continue down the church drive. At the end, turn left along the road. When you reach Upper Green, you can cut across the green, heading for the cricket pavilion. Just behind is the car park where you started.
