James Merriott continues his watercolour tour of the county with a return to the Stour Valley and this treasure trove of stunning landscapes

For this latest stage of my watercolour tour I have returned to the Stour Valley and selected a village to paint for this feature that is outstandingly beautiful and also boasts many exquisite villages nearby.

The Belchamps, Guestingthorpe and Bulmer, just to mention a few, but my focus here is Borley.

BORLEY PLACE

I adore being in this part of the county and the drive up from my home village of Hutton is also a joy for me with lots of the county’s countryside views to enjoy.

Here I am in my own county of Essex, that I have frequented and lived in for almost my entire 79 years, and yet I am still finding exciting new discoveries.

Small is beautiful, it is said, and Borley Church I found not only small but hidden behind very many beautifully manicured yew trees. The whole scene simply took my breath away.

THE CHURCH GATES
Picturesque church, outstanding Yew trees and superbly crafted gates all contribute to this perfect composition.THE CHURCH GATES Picturesque church, outstanding Yew trees and superbly crafted gates all contribute to this perfect composition.

You can see how it captured my imagination as I painted it twice, from inside and outside the churchyard.

They are slightly different views, but the subject bears repetition. Talking of memorable subjects, my exhibition, 80 Years of Art, is at Ingatestone Hall until July 15 (subject to Government guidelines) and then at my home gallery until February 18, 2021. Please call ahead to confirm opening.
