Mixing art with...Christmas magic

With the festive season upon us, Coggeshall is in the spotlight as a group of talented artists combine their talents and put on an exhibition that complements the town’s Christmas Fayre
ArtMix, a group of five talented artists from Coggeshall, met through their passion for creative art. Despite only forming in 2013, the artistic group has previously held three successful exhibitions, including one last Christmas and two summer exhibitions in 2014. ArtMix, the name, was chosen to reflect the diverse range of subject matter, media and styles in which each of the members work.
Louise Cowlin, a painter and textile artist, describes her work and influences as ‘figurative’, worked in various mediums and influenced by light and colour. Louise extends this into her textile creations and also dyes her fabrics with a keen focus on recycling, both elements she likes to include in her works.
After a career as a museum curator and bringing up a family, artist Sue Fraser has been a keen creator since childhood. Sue studied painting with the Open College of the Arts and enjoys experimenting with a variety of 2D media, and styles, for both figurative and abstract subject matter.
As a children’s book illustrator, Dorothea King has had a long and successful career, but now her favourite medium is painting. She explains: ‘I work mostly in oils and paint anything and everything that inspires me.’ Dorothea enjoys painting outdoors, in the open air, and a recent trip to France has inspired some of her work for the exhibition.
Liz Pottinger taught drawing and watercolour painting in further education for eight years. As an applied artist Liz particularly likes working with copper, silver, slate and wood. She is happy working with a wide range of materials, techniques and subjects and is currently exploring layering materials, using some sewing techniques.
For something completely different, Rose Langford is passionate about glass. She says: ‘I work with many creative glass techniques such as traditional stained leaded glass, copper foil, fused appliqué and enamelled. This enables me to create a rich tapestry of glass pieces for exhibitions and commissions.’
This year’s ArtMix Christmas exhibition includes a delightful array of artwork, enabling visitors to purchase a different gift for family and friends this Christmas, or treat themselves to something original.
With the ArtMix exhibition’s second day in full swing, the Coggeshall Christmas Fayre will also be taking place on December 6. In various locations around the small market town, there will be live entertainment culminating with the switching on of the town centre’s lights at 4pm. Children will be well catered for with rides and amusements, as well as the chance to meet Father Christmas in his grotto, at the Village Hall in Stoneham Street.
The Fayre is a traditional festive celebration, all of which should complement the ArtMix exhibition.
