Runner number 1

What is your name?
Darren Mattis

How old are you? 39

Where do you live?
Romford

What do you like about where you live?
Its close enough to Romford town centre without being too close. I am also close to my family and friends and I like the fact that you can be in Central London within the hour.

What is your reason for running the London Marathon?
In 2008, at the age of nine, my daughter Karli was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer called Ewings Sarcoma. Make-A-Wish granted Karlis wish for her to spend the day as a zoo keeper at Colchester Zoo. My two other daughters, Chloe and Ellie, my wife Lorraine, and myself all went to the zoo, so it was a great day for the whole family to relax and enjoy. It was such a welcome relief after the previous ten months of hospital stays, visits and major family disruption.

Who will be supporting you along the route?
Lorraine and my children, plus a few friends.

What time are you hoping for?
Im hoping for between 3 hours, 45 minutes and 4 hours.

What do you like about where you live? Im close to all my friends and family and its also nice living near the sea.

What is your reason for running the London Marathon? Ive always been keen on running and come from a family where my dad and two uncles have completed the London Marathon. I felt the need to follow in their footsteps and give it a try. Im also a PE teacher at a special needs school so it felt right to run for such a dedicated and fantastic charity as The Presidents Sporting Club/Essex Disabled Sports Foundation.

Who will be supporting you along the route? My girlfriend will be coming along with her parents. Also my parents, brother, sister, grandparents and auntie will be there to support, so its turned into a bit of a family day out.

What time are you hoping for? Im hoping to run under 3 hours 30 minutes.

Tell us about the charity you are running for? The Presidents Sporting Club/Essex Disabled Sports Foundation has now raised more than 1 million which has been donated to schools and organisations. I am 70 years of age this year and I have completed seven successful challenges to raise awareness of bowel cancer, but the London Marathon is a new challenge. This is the first time I have walked the Marathon. Im not running this time, as I will be too disabled.

My trainer, Peter Pollard, who has trained me for all of my challenges. He is 80 this year.
