TOP TREND: Inspiring Ironmongery

ACCORDING TO Sheena Lawrence, co-owner and designer at Jim Lawrence Ironworks, there’s no doubt that good ironmongery adds the perfect finishing detail to your home and can make such a difference to the overall look. Sheena explains: ‘It’s easy to overlook the finishing touches when you first think of a room design in the context of the big purchases, but adding ironmongery is a great way to support the style you are trying to achieve.’

When it comes to styles, Sheena has noticed a particular theme which is very on trend at the moment. She says: ‘An antiqued brass finish is still very popular, especially in period homes. The finish is created by treating each item with a careful balance of citric acids and each piece is individually polished, until the perfect-antiqued patina is achieved.’

Sheena adds: ‘We are finding a lot of people are interested in more understated ironmongery designs now. Even in period properties, people seem to be less keen on an ornate, slightly gothic style and are choosing designs with clean lines and elegant simplicity.’

Top Tip

It’s worth remembering that your guests’ first impressions of your home are made at the front door, so investing in a quality collection of front door furniture is a great way to boost the appearance of your entrance enormously.

Top Trend: Al fresco Tableware

THE BRITISH WEATHER can be unpredictable at times, but when the temperature is more favourable, the majority of us like to take advantage and celebrate outside by eating and entertaining. Alesha Gooderham, co-owner of Snape Maltings, believes good food and drink and having relaxing times with friends and family in the fresh air is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Alesha says: ‘Making the most of summer living is important and having comfortable and stylish outdoor dining is essential. There are many fantastic products out at the moment, including chunky ceramics influenced in colour and design by mid-century trends. We are calling it a contemporary rustic trend, since it’s easy to live with in our country setting, and the Da Terra range perfectly encapsulates the relaxed feel everyone deserves over the summer.’ Alesha adds: ‘This range is great as each piece is unique, dishwasher-safe and robust enough for everyday use. With its traditional Portuguese ceramic heritage combined with contemporary colours and eclectic patterning, every element, from mugs to bowls, is something to treasure and yet completely practical for indoors or out.’

TOP TREND: Contemporary Conservatories

For those looking for much needed extra space or aiming to increase the value of their home, adding a conservatory can offer the ideal solution. Stuart Blunden, director of Mulberrys of Suffolk, believes the use of conservatories has completely changed over the years. ‘Conservatories were commonly built as an extra lounge area, but now people are developing them into their kitchens instead. It has definitely become a popular trend, especially with the bi-fold doors, which have recently become more desirable again, and many people are now re-discovering their appeal. One of the most attractive aspects of bi-fold doors is that they take up far less space than standard doors, they allow light to flow in from the outside and can effectively bring your beautiful garden into your home’, says Stuart.

When it comes to style, Stuart reveals how people are moving away from the traditional image and choosing full glass orangeries and conservatories instead. He adds: ‘Standard traditional conservatories have been replaced with styles of a more modern build and materials like aluminum or seamless glass are being used to give that contemporary perception.’
