Julie Pryor from Tec Lifestyle reveals how a dated family kitchen was totally transformed into a modern, practical and stylish living space

Where did the inspiration for the project begin?

Our clients came into our showroom in Maldon on an unrelated errand and were inspired to begin their kitchen renovations when they saw our Lifestyle German Kitchen displays. The brief given to us was to transform what was quite an old fashioned and frankly tired family kitchen into a modern, clean lined room to create an area for social interaction as well as food preparation. It was clear when I did the home visit to take measurements that the rest of the house was very modern in layout and décor, and that the current kitchen just did not fit. Home visits are so important, not only from a technical point of view but also because they give a feel for how clients live and their decorative tastes, which ultimately helps in the design process.

After choosing the true handle-less cupboards in True White with the island and additional storage in Atlanta Acacia, the clients wanted the island to be the heart of the kitchen. As well as providing masses of storage, measuring 1,200mm x 2,400mm, it also houses a CDA 30cm wine cooler and a Siemens 90cm Induction Hob, but more than that it was the centre of the kitchen – if not the home – and is where friends and family can sit and chat while the host is entertaining them.

Were there any specific requests or design challenges?

We were asked to provide a bespoke cupboard to cover a utility metre in the corner of the room, which we did. With a minimalist design, there is always a danger of the room looking too clinical, but with finishes chosen the room still feels warm and inviting. Julie also used the bespoke glass splash back to inject a subtle touch of colour in Moss Green, to really lift the whole design.
