Cindy de Vos is the creative director at Open Door Interiors and the interior designer behind the Augustine show home at Countryside’s Beaulieu Heath development in Chelmsford. Here she explains how New England colonial styling flows throughout this contemporary Essex home
Historically, our county’s links with America are strong and varied so when overseeing the interior design of The Augustine show home at Beaulieu Heath in Chelmsford; it was a natural opportunity to bring a little Nantucket to Essex. The project was great fun and it was quite refreshing to have a slightly more sophisticated brief rather than the usual expectation of bling!
The design inspiration for the interior was taken from the stunning New England colonial style of the exterior of the house — with its gorgeous weatherboarding, steeply pitched roof, brickwork chimney and traditional veranda across the front of the house.
This style dates from the 1600s when many pilgrims emigrated from Europe to the United States, following in the footsteps of the very first pilgrims who sailed from Harwich in The Mayflower to forge a new life, and built homes along the coastline influenced by techniques and styles from England.
In creating the interior, we wanted to create a warm, fun-filled family environment where everyone could relax and enjoy spending time together. We looked to create a nautical, beachside theme throughout the house to capture the overall New England style of the property and ensure a stylish yet relaxed ambience.
The heart of the house is the open-plan kitchen, dining and family room which is a must for a busy family home. The modern kitchen reinforces the cleanliness of line that depicts the New England style and we integrated beachside fabrics with a soft neutral palette to make you feel that you’ve arrived on holiday.
Fabrics have been chosen to withstand the day to day wear and tear of family life but still giving that crisp clean look that only a soft stripe can achieve. A French style armchair bringing in the colonial style and drawing your eye to the outdoor area further extends the living space, while a variety of scatter cushions with textural fabrics offer the nautical yachtsman vibe.
French doors lead out to the landscaped rear garden, which features a decked area where the family can enjoy dining al fresco. Formal landscaping, complete with a carefully manicured lawn at the front of the house, provides a calm, inviting vista to enjoy from the outdoor sofa set on the traditional veranda. Here the family can relax and enjoy reading a book or the morning papers with a cup of coffee.
There is a slightly more formal sitting room which is perfect for entertaining guests. Our leading fabric colour is still being carried through in the blue floral used to dress the windows.
This coupled with an elegant buttoned Chesterfield sofa and chairs with soft checks and washed oak accents creates a peaceful setting to relax and soft lighting with accents of chrome really make the room feel sumptuous.
For cold winter nights, there is a traditional wood burner in the fireplace that adds character and charm. Also on the ground floor is a study, which is traditionally designed to create the perfect environment to work from home, plus a cloakroom and double garage.
The dual aspect design of the master bedroom suite ensures the room is flooded with light, which allowed us the opportunity to use soft beiges and blues to create a grown up take on our theme.
Natural woods with crisp white paintwork and soft striped wallpaper goes to create a soft unfussy style which chimes with this brief. A mini chaise longue draws you into the room, imagining a lazy Sunday morning relaxing with a book. The tailored headboard and variety of scatter cushions and throws use a variety of textures to build the simple, slightly casual look we all desire. The room is completed with a stunning en suite bathroom and dressing area with fitted wardrobes.
The stylish boy’s bedroom is a room in which to grow, with soft grey walls mixed with elements of denim and red giving the room a fresh, uncluttered feel. The use of utility style furniture further develops the durable yet comfortable New England style, while an accent rug softens the scheme with bold light fittings and simple styling. This bedroom also enjoys an en suite shower room, which we decorated with coordinated bathroom accessories.
A traditional girly room is a rare opportunity to rock the pink, but on this occasion we went full out, creating a room fit for a princess. This is every little girl’s dream with fresh pink fabric in contrasting designs. We chose a valance top heading working again with a soft colonial feel in our window treatment styles.
The feature light provides a whimsical effect to the room and soft white furniture with a hint of further pink adds to the fun. The main family bathroom and both en suite shower rooms are stylish in design to capture the overall colonial style of the property, with ceramic tiling and walnut shelving beneath the hand basin and white sanitary ware.
Shaken not stirred is the theme for the cinema room on the second floor, creating a paradise for the whole family, whether spending time together or with friends chilling out and watching a movie.
The colours still evoke the beachside theme while the sleek furniture and day beds bring it a little more up to date. The blue walls and ceiling give the room both a cool but coastal feel, while soft linens, natural woods and fur throws create a sumptuous look to this hideaway at the top of the house.
