Essex Life speaks to Nigel Hollis, a senior design consultant for Hutton Kitchens in Billericay, who talks us through an iconic design for a stunning and contemporary kitchen
Nigel Hollis is a senior design consultant for Hutton Kitchens. He has been designing kitchens for more than 25 years and has a wealth of experience and knowledge under his belt. Hutton Kitchens are a mid to high-end, design-led kitchen showroom, which has been trading for more than 20 years. It is based in Billericay.
What kitchen designs are you enjoying?
Hutton Kitchens’ ranges comprise of contemporary, traditional and bespoke hand-made kitchens, with manufacturers in the UK and Germany. Nigel’s signature style is creating modern designs with a unique twist that is individual to each client.
We have seen a huge demand in open-plan living, which gives Nigel a lot more input and freedom with his design, allowing him to create the perfect cooking, dining and entertainment area. Nigel enjoys creating sleek, open-plan spaces where the kitchen is the hub of the home.
What was the brief behind this project?
This particular client was looking for a modern kitchen that made a statement, which is why they chose Nigel as their designer. It had to be a well thought out space for cooking, dining and entertaining with somewhere that the couple could also add a TV/media area.
The clients wanted a sleek look which is why they opted for a handle-less kitchen and had shown a keen interested in adding Miele appliances to the new design. Miele products are designed, tested and engineered to last for up to 20 years and to give a high standard of performance.
Talk us through the design
The main aspect of the brief given to Nigel by the client was to create a statement kitchen. He approached this task by creating a statement on each wall.
Nigel, in agreement with the client, was able to block an existing, redundant door giving space for a greater amount of tall units. Further utilising the new wall, he now had space to house all the exciting new Miele appliances the client requested, framing the tall units with an enticing light feature above.
The same lighting was used to frame the TV/media unit with LED Lights to give it a floating effect. The client had seen a few features in the Billericay showroom which they loved and was keen to add to the new kitchen.
The most prevalent of which was the black glass climber which Nigel matched with the Siemens black chimney hood with a curved glass canopy for a perfect statement finish. The LED lights built into the extractor provide warm ambient light to complement the kitchen and illuminate their cooking space.
We also show mirrored plinths in our showroom, which was a perfect feature to add to this design as it ties in with modern look bouncing the light.
For Nigel, the biggest statement piece for this kitchen is the bespoke feature wine wall with the colourful LED lights which shine through the wine bottles.
The clients wanted to add an artistic touch by having a graffiti artist to create an unique design on this exciting feature in the new kitchen, which we were able to accommodate. Lastly, to tie it all together and to incorporate the dining area, Nigel created a hexagon shaped dining table using the same material as the worktop
