September sees the climax of the sixth Essex Summer of Art and Janice Walker ventures south to highlight some events in Loughton, Thurrock and Richford offering something special
Since it began in 2009, The Essex Summer of Art has given a vast number of artists the opportunity to exhibit some of their work in art trails across the county, but this is the first year Loughton has put on an art trail. Loughton isn’t new to celebrating the talents of its local artists though; the established Loughton Festival, which takes place each spring, has included visual arts events for several years. Having a separate event, Loughton focuses specifically on the thriving arts scene and honours the great pool of talent, past and present, living in and around the town. Art will be exhibited across the town from Saturday, September 6 until Sunday, September 14, and there will be a historical display highlighting the town’s artistic heritage. The event is family-friendly with a children’s trail, incorporating a quiz with prizes, which takes place alongside the main trail.
Thurrock chooses to celebrate its artists as a borough, and The Thurrock Art Trail takes place between Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 21. The trail encompasses an array of artistic genres including painting, sculpture and crafts. The works exhibited, in a variety of venues, include traditional, contemporary, landscape, figurative, abstract, realistic and surreal, ensuring there is something to appeal to all tastes. Both professional and amateur artists are taking part and a number of Thurrock towns and villages will be hosting events, which include (among many others) a Well House Gallery group exhibition in Horndon on the Hill, an Expressions of the Soul group exhibition at Thameside Complex Foyer Gallery in Grays, Realist Urban Landscapes in South Ockendon and an Art and Photography Show at Grays Methodist Church.
Rochford District isn’t new to The Essex Summer of Art and its award-winning Art Trail takes place in the medieval market town of Rochford between Thursday, September 18 and Saturday, September 27. The trail hosts work by around 100 artists and designer-makers and is exhibited in numerous locations around the town, making it as easy on the feet as it is on the visual senses. The Art Trail has evolved over the years to ensure it remains fresh and interesting, and it attracts both new and returning visitors.
The sun may be setting on this year’s Essex Summer of Art, but Loughton, Thurrock and Rochford offer Essex art lovers further opportunities to enjoy and admire the work by some of our county’s most gifted and talented artists. n
