The Rodings is a group of several villages south of Great Dunmow and this route takes you from the pretty village of White Roding to the quiet village of Abbess Roding and back again

Leave the recreation ground car park by the access road and turn left at the end, heading towards the village. When you reach the main road (A1060) turn left and then immediately right along the pavement of Church Lane. You pass many pretty cottages. If you have time, take a look at St Martin’s Church which is up a track on the right. Continue along the lane and pass the converted windmill. At the next road junction, take the right turning along Matching Lane.

Proceed to Kingston Barn and opposite, on the left, cross the planked bridge onto the footpath which runs across the crop field.

At the way-marker post at the next field, with the ditch to your left, continue over more planks and through the next crop field, then cross a third little plank bridge and over a stile into a sheep field. Bear right along the field boundary to the corner of the field and through a double metal gate, then immediately go through the metal gate on your left (unsigned) and go diagonally across the garden to the wooden gate next to the cottage by the road.

Take the footpath almost opposite going across the field. At the end, at the way-marker, go straight on across the next field. At the end of this one, go left the other side of the hedgerow and along the field edge to the way-marker where you bear right cutting across the field. This then follows a ditch to the right. When you reach the corner, cross a bridge, then go right across the ditch. Continue left (if the path is not available across the field) around the field edge and past the lake. Swing right and at the end of the wooden fence go left, taking you to the lane.

Turn left along the lane. At the road junction, go straight on, (signed to White Roding). Continue to the pretty parish church of St Edmund. Just after the church, take the footpath on the left over the wooden bridge, then soon after veer right through the farm buildings. Then go through a wide gap in the hedge and follow the way-marker across the field. Cross a bridge and turn right along the field edge to the road. Turn left then immediately afterwards, go right onto the footpath running across the field. At the end of the field follow the arrow left and then soon after go right across the ditch culvert and continue up to the road.

Turn left along the lane. Pass a farm and Grange Barn and then a pond. Just after the next road junction, the other side of Moncks Green Cottage, take the footpath on the right. Go to the right of the ditch so that the hedge is on your left. Soon after the path bends right, go left across the brook and across the field. There is a good view of White Roding windmill to your left. Proceed straight on to the end and at the main road turn left along the pavement on the other side of the road. Pass Bretts Farm and the pub and go back to the junction where you turn right back to the recreation ground.
