Judges were looking for a shop, restaurant or stall that clearly demonstrated the provenance of its food and had plenty of Essex produce. Nominees for this category had staff able to tell customers where the food came from and exactly how it was reared or grown.

Winner: Acanteen

Judges said: All three short listed businesses are to be highly commended on their approach to food sourcing, supply and service. Selecting one to win this award has been very difficult. However, the winner for the Essex Life Finest Food and Drink Awards 2015 - Field to Fork Category is ACanteen. Every dish served is prepared from scratch in their open kitchen using fresh, ethically produced and sustainably sourced ingredients. Managing Director Emma Odell speaks enthusiastically about the relationship she has built with local farmers who understand the ethos that runs throughout ACanteen. Suppliers of many of their staple ingredients from meat to coffee, are listed on their website. Emma’s mother supplies a range of salad, vegetable, fruit and herbs as well as eggs, from the family small holding. However, the considerable increase in covers following their recent move is focusing their thinking towards the efficiencies to be gained from growing larger quantities of specific crops.
