PREPARING for her son's fifth birthday celebrations was the catalyst which led Linda Allport-Hodge to become an entrepreneur.
PREPARING for her sons fifth birthday celebrations was the catalyst which led Linda Allport-Hodge to become an entrepreneur.
We came across two giant chocolate fountains, one milk and one white chocolate, and Declans face was just a picture. It was then that I thought I need to get one for his birthday, says Linda. After shopping around unsuccessfully, Linda found a manufacturer of the fountains and sourced the ingredients. His party that year was a huge hit and all the other mums asked where I got the fountain from because all the children wanted one now.
A business is born
And so a business was born, but Linda was working up to that point as a business analyst in the City. Declan was at an age that I really wanted to be able to spend more time at home with him, so it seemed a perfect opportunity and there was definitely a gap in the market.
That was in 2005 and now the Essex Chocolate Fountain Company is thriving, offering both business and private clients the very best in luxury chocolate and Champagne fountains.
We only use Callebaut Belgian chocolate, its really the Rolls Royce of chocolate. We import it ourselves and its pure and therefore free from any nuts, which is good for those with allergies, and its also kosher.
Lindas company supplies all of the delicious side dishes which accompany the fountains including fruit kebabs, vanilla fudge, sugared donuts and marshmallows to name just a few of the most popular ones. The fountains were recently used at the BAFTAs after awards party where Daniel Day Lewis was among the guests. All of our girls were queuing up to serve at that one, Linda laughs.
As well as the fountains, The Essex Chocolate Fountain Company provides fully-trained serving staff and each fountain can be colour co-ordinated to your event with fresh flowers. The fountains can be purchased as well as hired, and Lindas husband, Steve, works on the e-sales for the company via its website. Following success in the county, the couple are now working on plans to not only supply the UK, but also a global market too.
