SARAH GREEN is the third generation of her family to farm at Tillingham and while she studied at college, Sarah arranged for the organic conversion of 30 acres of the family farm.
It took a year for the land to become certified organic by the Soil Association. I always wanted to come home and work on the family farm, but there wasnt room for me, so we had to diversify.
Sarah had always been interested in growing good quality, local produce, with her father working on the farm and her mother working as a greengrocer. More and more people were asking mum for organic vegetables, so we knew there was a market for it, so it felt the right thing for me to do.
Everything in season
Sarah grows everything in season so this month its all the winter brassicas including red cabbages, kale, purple sprouting broccoli plus parsnips, leeks, celeriac, swede, beetroot, potatoes and onions. Throughout the year her range of crops is vast, enabling her to provide a box delivery scheme of fresh organic vegetables delivered on a Thursday or Friday either weekly or fortnightly. She also regularly supplies Lathcoats Farm Shop in Galleywood, Lubbards Farm Shop in Rayleigh and Greens greengrocers on Maldon High Street, and theres a regular drop off in Wickford at the health store at Ladygate Centre.
Sarahs box delivery scheme covers the Dengie Peninsular and you can check out her website for a list of villages she currently delivers to. However, dont be put off if yours isnt featured yet as there are plans to cover more of Colchester and even further afield.
Im always expanding, Sarah adds. If people ring and ask I might just need one more person to show interest in that area and I can start a delivery to their village too.
The vegetables are delivered to your door in reusable crates or left somewhere safe, as many of her customers are out at work. Sarah hand picks the produce straight from the field and makes sure each weeks box has variety.
Customers let me know if they dont like a certain thing or if they grow it themselves so I can leave that out. Each week there are always potatoes and carrots and then the rest is led by whatever is in season. Sarah also includes a recipe sheet to inspire you and a newsletter to tell you whats due to come in to season in the forthcoming weeks.
Her huge range of produce means shes working in all weathers and for long hours right throughout the year. I can see the North Sea from my vegetable field, so its rather bitter at this time of year. However, I wouldnt want an office job I love working with the seasons, planting and harvesting. By the end of the summer Im looking forward to the short days and getting the work done early, and then by the end of the winter I cant wait to feel the sun on my back again.
