Make 2018 a year of good memories by checking out the many events taking place throughout 2018 at this 4-star hotel on the outskirts of Wivenhoe

Research has found that people who spend their hard earned cash on memorable experiences rather than material items are happier and feel their money is better spent.

So for 2018 you can try to put this to the test. Stop looking at luxury cars or the latest handbags and start making a list of things you would like to do or learn and start ticking them off.

Regular bursts of happiness generated by sharing enjoyable experiences with your loved ones are far better for you than one big splurge. Having plenty of good memories in the bank will help you on the bad news days and keep you smiling through stressful times, particularly if you have something to look forward to.

In our busy lives getting together with friends and family happens all too infrequently, perhaps now is the time to share diaries and pick some key events during 2018 to enjoy with different groups.

At Wivenhoe House, on the outskirts of Wivenhoe, we can offer you some food for thought. Much more than a luxury four-star hotel, Wivenhoe House has a packed calendar of events to keep everyone entertained and well fed as well as a brasserie restaurant, which brings a taste of France to this attractive corner of North Essex.

The brasserie is open every day and if you have a group of friends who are all fans of fish you can make a date for Fish Friday on the first Friday of every month, when guests enjoy a fantastic seafood buffet as well as a tasty array of main fish dishes.

Our events calendar is put together to suit everyone’s tastes. Starting, of course, with a traditional Burns’ Night celebration to be held on Saturday 27 January. Scottish bagpipes welcome you to the evening before a delicious themed dinner, including haggis and lots of whisky.

Our Fawlty Towers dinner on Friday 23 March will entertain everyone who enjoys the chaotic life of Basil Fawlty, Mine host is Edmond Wells, the only six foot seven inches tall Basil Fawlty impersonator who is the same height, walks the funny walk and talks the talk, an evening you’ll never forget.

You could complete your resolution to learn something new in 2018 by soaking up some wine knowledge at our popular Sommelier evenings. This year our Sommelier Lionel Lachasseigne heads to the Loire on Friday 27 April and then to Venice on Friday 28 September, guiding us through the various vintages.

If spirits are your thing, the gin dinner returns on Friday 27 July, or for the spooky version there’s a Murder Mystery evening ‘The Feast of the Dead’ on Friday 26 October.

That’s just a few of the highlights from the year ahead at Wivenhoe House, we hope there’ll be your highlights too.
