The Manor Hotel & Restaurant, Rainham
THE Manor Hotel has recently been completely refurbished, writes Stephanie Mackentyre.
Formally Berwick Manor, it's within easy reach of Romford, Hornchurch and Upminster with the A13 linking it by a short drive to the Dartford crossing.
Surrounded on all sides by Rainham countryside, as I sat on the pretty patio waiting for my lunch I was surprised to only hear birds chirruping and the breeze through the trees - lovely.
Lunch was a very reasonable £11.95 for two courses or £14.95 for three. Warmed breads arrived with a choice of poppy seed or Parma ham, basil and mozzarella. I chose to start with air-dried fillet of beef with rocket and shaved Parmesan, dressed with extra virgin olive oil, a simple mix of hardy flavours, nicely presented.
For main course I chose the peppered chicken with a cream and brandy sauce on pan-fried field mushroom. The chicken was succulent with inviting aromas rising from the plate.
From the special lunch menu there was a choice of three desserts, saffron poached pears with vanilla ice cream almost got my vote but in the end I had to go with the raspberry crème brulee. A satisfying crack as my spoon delved below the caramel revealed rich, velvety layers of vanilla brulee.

My total bill came to £18.45 for three courses, and a glass of wine. This is an independent review, featuring a restaurant selected and experienced by our food and wine editor. The restaurant was not told it was being reviewed.
