Kosturi, Halstead

KOSTURI, part-owned by Topon Alam, makes up a trio of of restaurants, the others in Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds.

The interior is modern with muted lighting and crisp white table linen. My dining partner was new to Indian cuisine, so we opted for the set menu for two; popadoms with raitas and chutneys then a selection of mixed kebabs, a colourful dish of chicken and lamb tikka, and seek kebab with onion bhaji salad, just bursting with flavours. Then a trolley arrived laden with chicken tikka masala, korai gosht, sag aloo, mushroom bhaji, pilau rice and fresh nan bread.

Our meal ended with wonderfully smooth coffee, included in the price and in plentiful supply. It was served in bone china tea cups, imported directly from India.

If you love the idea of Indian food but in a sophisticated environment, this is the place for you. The clientele was an eclectic mix and if you are trying Indian fare for the first time, the set menu was not only very good value but also a splendid selection of flavoursome dishes.

Finally we took a sneak peak at the soon-to-be-opened wine bar above the main restaurant, open seven days a week, both venues are great places to take your friends to impress.
