When new neighbours, Harri Paddan and Samantha Perry, began a new friendship, they had no idea it would lead to a booming bakery business

IF YOUR New Year resolution this year is to follow your dreams, escape the rat race and set up your own business, then Harri Paddan and Samantha Perry provide the proof that you can achieve success.

Just 12 months ago, Harri and Samantha made the bold step to set up their own business. The friends, who also happen to be neighbours, realised that they both shared a passion for creating, and eating, beautiful cakes one afternoon while enjoying a cup of tea together and,
of course, a slice of cake. The only problem was that, as both of them were on a diet, they needed to find a way to enjoy the cakes without actually eating them. As a solution the friends decided that they would have to have their cake and not eat it and they set up their own baking business making cupcakes. House of CupCakes was born and one year on it is already a thriving new company.

Harri explains: Samantha and I were just chatting one day when we came up with the idea of setting up a cake company together. Having discovered a passion for cakes and also not being able to eat them (as we were both dieting) we thought it would be a good idea to set up a cake company so we can still be near the cakes, but not actually eat them. A few months later, at the start of 2009, we launched House of CupCakes.

Fresh thinking
Currently a part-time venture fulfilled on evenings, weekends, days off and any other spare time the pair have, House of CupCakes has been set up to make, supply and sell homemade cup cakes to the local community in Priors Green, a new village development on the Essex and Hertfordshire border.

With a motto of, cakes straight from the oven and not from the shelf Harri and Samantha went back to basics.
We dropped leaflets through doors in our neighbourhood to spread the word, says Harri. We also introduced ourselves to our new neighbours as they arrived on the new development and, most importantly, told them about our new business.

These old fashioned marketing methods worked wonders and they now have a bursting order book which features repeat orders from neighbours who want everything from fairy cakes for birthday parties to wedding orders from brides who seek the modern alternative to a traditional wedding cake. House of CupCakes even caters for small dinner parties and sells at a local farmers market every month.
We take our inspiration from anything and everything, says Harri. We like experimenting with flavours. Coffee chocolate is definitely the flavour of the month, but in the past we have had success with our carrot cake with cream cheese topping and at the moment we are testing the water with peanut butter and jam.
