ICE CREAM by Appointment is the latest venture to come from the award-winning Homemade by Hadley ice cream company based in Colne Engaine. Jane Hadley came up with the idea to deliver the producer’s famously delicious flavours to weddings, parties, proms and corporate events. The ice cream can be served as canapés, as traditional ice creams in cones or as a dessert with homemade shortbread and Jane has three alternative solutions she offers for this contemporary approach to catering, depending on the numbers of guests.

For more than 60 guests, Jane wheels in Hadley’s adorable ice cream barrow. ‘It does look beautiful, but it needs to be used indoors as it needs electricity. There are up to four flavours and the guests can see them on show, so choosing what to have is all part of the fun.’

The barrow is decorated with bunting and hearts or you can use your own decorations to match the theme of your party. Next is Jane’s vintage ice cream bike. ‘The vintage ice cream bike is ideal for churchyards and anywhere outdoors where there’s no electricity, so we’ve used it in fields too before,’ Jane explains.

For parties of 100 or more the ice cream can even be served in vintage tea cups to continue the theme. For the larger wedding receptions and corporate events, Jane’s cool ice cream van is popular. ‘I was looking for a camper van as they are so popular and I found this conversion in the West Country,’ says Jane. Jane had it converted so that the roof lifts up to reveal 12 different flavours. As all of the ice cream for sale is made by Hadleys, there is even the chance to produce bespoke flavours to suit the bride and groom or the event.

‘I’ve made Baileys ice cream and limoncello sorbet for brides in the past and last year we made London Pride ice cream for an event. We’ve served ice creams in marquees, courtyards and even immaculate lawns, providing there was electricity of course.’

Jane’s ice cream has gone from strength to strength and she has been the proud winner of a long list of coveted awards since she began producing ice cream in 2001. Last year alone, Hadley won 12 separate accolades in the Great Taste Awards 2013.

‘By entering these competitions, it’s a way of judging where you are against other larger producers and to win an award in every ice cream and sorbet category means such a lot. I feel I must be doing something right.’
