IF YOU'VE yet to be enticed by the delights inside The Food Company at Marks Tey, you're missing a treat - literally. It's a foodie heaven stocked with an eclectic mix of delicious goodies from around the globe....
First you're met with a myriad of brightly-coloured fresh fruit and vegetables and a diligent army of willing and smartly-dressed staff to assist you.
Step in further to see shiny chrome shelves neatly stocked with every conceivable spice, herb, ready-made sauce, plus some chic cookware, an interesting selection of wines and beers, flowers, chocolates and a super range of giftware too.
Then check out the fabulous fresh meat and fish counters, and the 'to die for' Artisan bakery full of breads and pastries freshly-baked on the premises.
If you're rendered too weak to raise a saucepan, you can opt instead to take home a freshly-prepared ready meal, cooked by a team of on-site chefs, for you to pop in your oven and take all the credit.
There's also a bijou caf above on a mezzanine floor, offering four special lunches each day with a fresh salad bar. Breakfast is served every day until 11am too, and there are more of those freshly-baked cakes to try with a freshly-brewed cup of tea or coffee.
If you've something more adventurous in mind, they've probably got it. I noticed haggis, freshly-prepared curry pastes and even Italian string, all within feet of each other. The proprietor is Lesley Linch who launched the store as an antidote to the supermarket. He's passionate about sourcing and cooking real food and supporting farmers with sustainable and responsibly-grown produce.
'By using only the finest ingredients, I let the food speak for itself,'
Chef Josh Meehan loves his role at the store. 'By using only the finest ingredients, I let the food speak for itself,' explains Josh who is given carte blanche every day to create meals which will inspire the shoppers and his menu changes each morning.
Kate Livingstone has the enviable task of promoting the Food Company. 'I have to try the dishes so that I know the best way to spread the word about them,' says Kate. 'I've got the best job in the world.'
For my visit, Josh prepared eggs Benedict for Kate, steak burger on ciabatta for himself and a wonderful salad nioise for me to enjoy. My eggs, with their bright yellow yokes, had travelled just 200 yards from a local farm, while the strips of chargrilled tuna were perfectly pink, sat on top of fresh rocket studded with plump black olives.
There's a Christmas market planned for Thursday, December 4, from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets are 5 which is redeemable against any purchase of 50 made on the night.
