The fabulous prize includes two nights accommodation in the Mayflower suite at the hotel with full breakfast and a three-course dinner in the Harbourside restaurant on one evening of your stay, plus dinner in the Ha’penny Bistro on the other night of your stay.

Designed to resemble a Venitian palazzo, The Pier hotel was built in 1864 to accommodate passengers departing from Harwich to the continent, and in one sense nothing has changed as visitors still depart for Holland on the twice-daily ferry across the North Sea.

The hotel, with 4 AA stars, is located in the heart of Harwich old town in an enviable position overlooking the picturesque harbour and Ha’penny Pier.

The Pier has two great restaurants — the Harbourside is on the first floor and is open from Wednesday through to Sunday, for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is renowned for using locally-caught seafood, much of which is landed in the harbour opposite. The menu has been designed by John Goff, who has just taken up the reins as head chef having been with the company for 20 years. John takes much influence from the sea, so expect to see local fishermen bringing their daily catch to the back door. Harwich lobster is always on the menu, served either grilled, poached or thermidor. The Harbourside restaurant also serves fabulous steaks if you prefer. Enhancing the food is the simple, stylish interior with amazing views over the confluence of the Stour and Orwell rivers.

On the ground floor, the Ha’Penny Bistro is open all day, with the full menu served from 12 noon with no need to book, which can be useful if you are arriving by sea. The terrace is open in the summer, perfect for a glass of wine or for watching the world and the boats go by. The Pier has 14 delightful bedrooms, many of which offering views out to sea and the harbour, while the Mayflower suite even comes complete with telescope.
