HILLCREST NURSERIES
A place I love to visit and not just for geraniums. The floral display is quite staggering and with owners Sally and Les along with the staff offer exceptional service.

Archant

James Merriott continues his watercolour tour of the county with a visit to location close to home and close to his heart

I love the opportunity to explore every aspect of the county and during my time of sharing these watercolour compilations with the readers of Essex Life I have visited and painted close to 100 Essex destinations.

This month, while I didn't have to put too many miles on the clock to visit the subject of this feature, it was a particular special place for me and there was still so much to enjoy.

THE BOARS HEAD INN
In contrast to the Olde Dog this building was in beautiful sunshine. I did however use the same strong colour (Alizarin Crimson & Ultramarine Blue) for this foreground shadow.THE BOARS HEAD INN In contrast to the Olde Dog this building was in beautiful sunshine. You see, Herongate is just a short drive from where I live and is a location I am very familiar with and yet still love to celebrate.

THE CRICKET PAVILLION
A lovely sight for the motorist along the busy A128 and they must hope that batsmen at the wicket don't hit a six as they are passing.THE CRICKET PAVILLION A lovely sight for the motorist along the busy A128 and they must hope that batsmen at the wicket don't hit a six as they are passing.

There is so much I love about my neighbouring village of Herongate, so much so that I exceeded my usual portrayal of six watercolours for this feature.

I'm hoping that the magazine's editorial designer will find room to reproduce them all, and so this month I will limit my words and let the paintings do the talking.

THE OLDE DOG INN
With strong sunlight behind the building I added more shadow colour than usual to the focal point. I also removed the sturdy front wall revealing the happy activity.THE OLDE DOG INN With strong sunlight behind the building I added more shadow colour than usual to the focal point.
