James Merriott continues his watercolour tour of the county by giving this beautiful market town a seasonal twist

At the same time that I was completing these watercolours of Saffron Walden, I looked back over some very special paintings.

Many of you may have seen these pictures in November’s Essex Life magazine, where I took a stroll down memory lane with the help of my friend Greg Norden. Widely acknowledged as the authority on railway artwork, he kindly provided a selection of Essex scenes from the Greg Norden Collection, including a couple from my dear old Uncle Jack.

These were works by the brilliant British artists who produced publicity posters and carriage panels for the railways in the middle of the last century. Apart from the sheer joy of appreciating what had gone before, it is the techniques they used, the apparent ease of application, the choice of sumptuous colours and the placing of figures that inspires me so much.

Placing of figures brings me back to Saffron Walden and these watercolours here. All have at least one figure included, helping to add life, tie the subject to the foreground, add a splash of more colour and, once in a while, encourage an alternative thought.

Each of these scenes has a dusting of snow to add seasonal magic, except for the one of Market Square. It was completed on a sunny day in September and I just had to include the ladies on the monument steps, and I couldn’t have them sitting in snow.
