Burnham on Crouch

The Rotary Club of Burnham on Crouch

This Burnham-based club is one of 1,800 Rotary groups throughout the UK and its members aim to raise lots of funds for local and international charities, and make some new friends in the process.

Club secretary, Peter Marshall, who joined the club in 1993, explains: Its a social club with like-minded people who like to meet for a chat and a drink. But, to give it more substance, we hold a lot of fundraising activities and over the course of a year we can raise around 10,000.

The club also supports local groups and charities and most recently members took a group of disabled people ten pin bowling. They also support a number of educational events and youth opportunities and regularly work with St Peters High School in Burnham.

On an international level the club has donated money to ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter and supplies to those affected by disasters.
Peter adds: We sponsored a box that went to Japan and Haiti. They cost around 600 each and its a continual process. Mercyships, which supports some of the worlds poorest people, is another charity we raise money for and were also in contact with a school in East Africa.

The thing I like most about the club is the social side and, like many others, I also get a lot of satisfaction from helping good causes locally and internationally. The club currently has 39 members, but were always appealing for new people to join us, especially some young people to help organise events.

Burnham Carnival Club

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find active carnivals in local communities nowadays, but in Burnham the annual carnival is bigger than it has ever been thanks to a dedicated committee and a close-knit community.

Vice president John Randall, who joined the committee in 1967, explains: The carnival is part of the towns tradition and I think the reason why ours is so successful is because the town sits on its own and its a community event which involves everyone.

This year, the illuminated carnival procession will be held on Saturday, September 24 in the High Street and between 30 and 40 floats will be taking part. Visitors can also expect to see stalls, trade shows, groups singing and dancing, gymnastics, a brass band, fancy dress and a road show held by BBC Essex.

There will also be around 500 people with collection boxes, raising money for local groups and charities, and this year the team hope to donate around 4,000 to worthy causes.

Carnival Week begins on Monday, September 19 with a series of quizzes running throughout the week as well as a brass band concert. The annual event takes a committee of 20 people a year to organise, and John is always appealing for new members to join.

He adds: Its a fantastic event to be involved with and we appreciate all the help we can get, so come and join us! Not only will you meet new people, but you will also be doing something good for the community.

The Royal Burnham Yacht Club

Founded in 1895 and receiving royal patronage in 1927, The Royal Burnham Yacht Club is at the heart of sailing on the River Crouch. Situated on the key side on the waters edge, the club has an active motorboat section and its own fleet of boats including RS Elite boats and the Royal Burnham One Design which will be celebrating its 80th anniversary next year.

The club, which has around 650 members, also has a cadet section, where youngsters aged from eight years old upwards are catered for, and its also exploring the possibility of providing adult sailing instruction.

Commodore Chris Slatter, who has been sailing for 40 years, comments: We pride ourselves on being a family-orientated club and we have many long-term family connections. Were also very much a social club rather than just a sailing organisation and the thing I enjoy the most is the camaraderie.

The RBYC is one of five yacht clubs in the town, highlighting the towns nautical connections as well as a fun sense of competitiveness and local rivalry. This is demonstrated most obviously during Burnham Week a week of yachting events held on the River Crouch. This year the annual event will be held from August 27 to September 3 and members will host dinners and entertainment during the evenings to allow the competitors to socialise and enjoy the event.

Chris adds: Its a great club to be a part of and anyone is welcome to join, from beginners to experienced yachtsmen.
