With spring and warmer weather on the horizon, the May bank holidays and upcoming half term are the ideal opportunities to make the most of local attractions, all of which are served by Greater Anglia trains

With many attractions offering 2 for 1 deals, families can enjoy the local hotspots during the school holidays without breaking the bank or venturing too far from home with Greater Anglia.

Save on fun days out across East Anglia when travelling by train, with a Families & Friends Railcard saving up to 1/3 off most rail fares. With the card, up to four adults and four children can go on an adventure across the county. Adults can make savings of up to a third on most rail fares, while kids can save 60% on fares.

As an added bonus, families travelling by train can take advantage of Greater Anglia offer and get 2 for 1 admissions into some of East Anglia and London’s top attractions.

To help families and groups decide what to do over the May half term, Greater Anglia have rounded up some of the best activities across East Anglia and beyond where you can use a Greater Anglia train ticket to save money on a fun family day out over the bank holiday below.

Travel back in time

Hop off one of Greater Anglia’s trains into yesteryear at the East Anglian Railway Museum. Discover transport of the past and explore the historic locomotives and vintage steam trains. Young visionaries can even act out the role of station master for the day, dressing up in the period uniform, pulling the levers and pressing the button to take control of the railways. The museum is a fully immersive experience and is fun for the whole family.

Price: Adult tickets: £7.00; Children tickets (5-15): £4.00; 2FOR1 allows entry for two people with one person paying full price

Closest station: Chappel & Wakes Colne

Cream tea for two

Have a relaxing afternoon on the Norfolk coast and relish in a classic British tradition with an afternoon tea. The Links hotel in West Runton is offering the leisurely afternoon activity – a great experience grandparents, parents and children can bond over. Once the last of the tea has been drunk and the scones are eaten, a walk around the local area is recommended to make the most of the spring weather. What better way to reflect on a delightful afternoon.

Price: Buy a cream tea at the hotel (£4.50) and get one free

Closest station: West Runton

See Cambridge by boat

Sail the smooth waters around Cambridge on a scenic punting tour of the College Backs. Hear inspiring stories of the great minds that have emerged from the school such as the late Stephen Hawking, and be amazed by the landscape as the guide takes the family on a mystical boat ride.

Price: around £19; 2FOR1 allows for two people to go punting with one person paying full price

Closest station: Cambridge

Explore the great beyond in 3D

Go further afield to London and beyond. The universe, planet Earth and under the sea are just some of the fascinating mysteries that can be seen in 3D IMAX at The Science Museum. With Greater Anglia, families can feel a part of the action as they watch captivating documentaries on a world yet to be discovered.

Price: Museum entry, free; 2FOR1 offer applies to 40-min 3D IMAX® documentary films only

Closest station: London Liverpool Street, and tube connections to South Kensington
