Harwich Festival

Making waves will be the major theme for the Harwich Festival 17 with exhibitions flowing out from the Art Quarter to the very streets of Harwich and beyond.The main exhibition will be complemented by short films, including the public arts display Making Waves, further exhibitions of work by local professional artists at Bodgeners Art Gallery, the Old Bank and an extended exhibition Windows on Art. HF17 is a combined arts festival and alongside the visual art there is a wide range of music with major classical concerts, jazz, folk, stunning solo artists and the Harwich Music Collective, plus much more.

Paintings by Simon Carter

Hayletts Gallery, Oakwood House, 2 High Street, Maldon CM9 5PJ

Living close to the coastline, Simon Carter continuously makes records of observation in drawings which are later transfigured into paint back in his studio. Painting with sensual colours in acrylic on canvas he successfully pushes away from some kind of perceived fact towards a felt truth, offering the very essence of the land and sea around him.

An Introduction to the study of Bumblebees

Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre, Layer de la Haye, Colchester CO2 0EU

The course will discuss the range of bumblebees found in Essex and the UK, the books available to aid identification and other learning, methods of observation and preliminary skills in putting a name to specimens. The ecological requirements of the Essex species will also be discussed. The day will be spent in looking for bumblebees to name and discuss their behaviour and ecology.

The 3ft Festival

The UK’s largest outdoor festival exclusively for pre-school children! This sell-out, award-winning event welcomes more than 14,000 big (and little) people across three days within the beautiful grounds of the Hylands Estate.

The Gallery at Parndon Mill, Off Elizabeth Way, Harlow CM20 2HP

A fantastic exhibition to celebrate Harlow’s 70th birthday showing paintings, drawings and prints of some of the attractive features of the town.

Award-winning gardening event with Beth Chatto

Ivor Crewe Lecture Theatre Colchester CO4 3WA

A lecture from renowned garden designer and Chelsea Gold Medal winner, Dan Pearson, works in conjunction with Beth Chatto Education Trust to host a talk about gardening and horticulture in support of the Beth Chatto Education Trust. Dan is one of the patrons of the Beth Chatto Education Trust, which was set up to carry forward to young and old, Beth Chatto’s passion for plants and her ‘right plant in the right place’ ethos to a new generation.

The Importance of Being Ernest

Outdoor Theatre in the Garden returns this summer with a comic classic from Oscar Wilde. Bring your own picnic and settle into their garden for an evening of hilarity, high jinks and escapades. A bar will be available to purchase drinks on the night.
