Popular with locals, the Restaurant is located in the heart of the delightful village of Matching Green on the Hertfordshire and Essex border overlooking the village green which at 4.9 hectares is one of the largest surviving village greens in Essex.

The Chequers Matching Green is open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. It offers modern British cuisine with an Italian twist using the freshest ingredients, lovingly prepared.

Everything is homemade and where possible, sourced locally including vegetables from local allotments and fresh herbs grown in the Restaurant’s herb garden. The restaurant’s main menu includes an array of tempting starters, sharing platters and delicious mains such as pastas, salads, country classics as well as fish and steaks.

In addition, the Restaurant offers seasonal Specials, excellent value mid-week set lunch menu, Saturday brunch, Sunday roast and a small bar snack menu. The wine and the cocktail lists complement the menu and have something for everyone. Whether it’s a bottle of Italian Gavi served with whole sea bream or an ever so popular Passiontinis as a pre-dinner cocktail.

The Chequers Matching Green provides well-spaced seating to enjoy lunch or dinner comfortably. The dining room has an open, understated style with a sophisticated yet relaxed ambience whilst our pub bar and lounge offers a more rustic, traditional country feel. Scattered with comfy leather chairs, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. You can also dine ‘al fresco’ during the summer on either our terraces or outside on the wooden benches overlooking the delightful village green.

The Chequers Lounge is a great place for family celebrations or special occasions with tables of 10 and up to 25 people; it overlooks the village green giving you the perfect setting for your celebration.

If you are looking for something different to do with friends and family, why not consider one of The Chequers’s Tribute Shows. These highly entertaining evenings feature a glass of Prosecco on arrival, a live music show starring a professional Tribute artist and a delicious 3 course dinner.

There are a number of regular local events happening every year on the village green that include the Essex Hunt, the Classic and Sports Car show, Cricket matches and the popular Bonfire Night celebrations.
