Inspired by BBC television programmes Great British Bake Off and MasterChef to get into the kitchen but don’t know where to start, or want to polish existing skills and learn new ones? These 8 cookery and baking schools might be a good start

BakeWELL in Dunmow aim to make baking fun for everyone and give people the tools and skills to create tasty, delicious showstopper cakes. They run a wide variety of courses, from simple decorating and building buttercream skills to creating flowers and French macarons. They also run children’s parties where children bake cup cakes. All courses have a refreshment break (long enough for a cuppa and sample a treat from the BakeWELL Patisserie), and equipment and ingredients are provided throughout the course as required. You will also receive 10 percent off all in store purchases on the day of your course.

Jo Wheatley’s Essex Cookery School

If The Great British Bake Off has inspired you why not learn from one of its winners? Jo Wheatley won the 2011 series and since then has set up her own baking school, which The Guardian Newspaper mentioned in its Top 5 baking schools. All demonstrations take place in just 2 miles from the Harlow junction 7 of the M11.

The Mersea Island Cookery School

The Mersea Island Cookery School is run, by Amanda Woodcraft, and aims to cater for everyone from beginner to expert. Classes range from bread making and cake baking to cooking game and seafood.

Cookies Cooking School

Catering for everyone from pre-school children to adults, you can learn everything from how to prepare simple meals to dinner parties and everything in between, including cake decorating. Classes are held in Great Notley Church Hall, near Braintree, and they also travel all over Essex providing parties, school workshops

The Smart School of Cookery

Started by Ann Hood, past contestant of BBC Masterchef, The Smart School of Cookery in Danbury it specialises in creating tasty dinners that will impress.

You can gain insider tips and tricks of the trade from Ann as well as specialist celebrity, professional and Smart School trained chefs, in an informal and relaxed atmosphere for up to 20 guests per class. The ingredients used are fresh, local and delicious, the tuition is professional and down to earth, and the completed dishes, sublime.

Fabulicious Baking School

Wannabe bakers will learn all the skills they need to emerge confident bakers here.

Course range from all day workshops to an evening a week for five weeks and covers skills from baking basics to macarons and verrines and everything in-between. There are also classes available for children.

Delightful Tea Bake School

An independent baking school based in Great Wakering, runs baking classes for every ability. Set within a renovated stable yard, they offer a range of baking courses including cakes, real bread making and pastry, with a selection of weekend and weekday availability. They also selected evening courses over the spring and summer months, plus adult and child classes during school holidays.

The Gourmet Cup Cake Company

Based in Chelmsford The Gourmet Cup Cake Company provides specialist cake courses, which range from creating fondant cakes to a 3 tiered stacked cake. Their tutors are highly skilled and friendly and can’t help but inspire you to create show-stopper creations.
