James Merriott continues his watercolourtour of the county with a visit to a village he feels sure would inspire the very greatest artists
Some time ago I visited Blackmore End, commissioned by the then resident owners to paint a large watercolour of their stunningly beautiful property at School Green.
I knew the property now had new owners, but it was an enormous thrill for me to revisit and again dwell on its incredible charm.
But it wasn’t just this superb dwelling that inspired me, I found so much more including Blackmore End’s two lovely greens, complete with a variation of picturesque cottages.
I chose a collection of attractive cottages for this feature with one exception, parts of the garden at School Green with the beautiful statues I have called Women in the Garden. Unashamedly, I adopted this title from one of Claude Monet’s masterpieces, sold to his fellow impressionist Frederick Bazille due to Monet’s poverty.
It provides a nice reflection on two great painters. Like me, they would have loved the beauty of Blackmore End and perhaps put up their easels.
Of course, Claude Monet (1840-1926) left his house and garden with its water lilies at Giverny in France to be appreciated by the world. Frederick Bazille (1841-1870) was killed in action during the Franco Prussian War aged 29.
